Australia Awards Alumni Workshop 2020

More than 70 Australia Awards alumni from South and West Asia gathered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in January to celebrate alumni achievements and success as part of this year’s Regional Alumni Workshop. The three-day workshop welcomed alumni from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, who all got an opportunity to share their stories and experiences, gain skills in impactful storytelling, and strengthen their professional networks across the region.

“Thank you to the team at Curative for your support to ensure the success of our Regional Alumni Workshop 2020. You and your team did an outstanding job as event delivery partners, from adhering to last-minute requests, problem-solving, and filling-in-the-blanks while doing it all with such enthusiasm, professionalism, and keen attention to detail. We have received positive feedback from our alumni on the delivery of the workshop. Thank you once again and we look forward to working with you again in the future.

WHEN: January 2020
WHERE: Cinnamon Grand Colombo
HOW BIG: 70 alumni from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and 30 Australia Awards staff.

THE BRIEF

The client proposed a high-end workshop on digital storytelling where alumni all got an opportunity to share their success stories and experiences, gain skills on impactful storytelling, and strengthen their professional networks across the region. The alumni were accompanied by senior diplomats from the region, as well as representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Australia Awards, and partner organisations in Sri Lanka.

“Your stories show that positive change can happen, that problems can be resolved. Your stories have a message of hope and hope is a strong motivator of change”
Dr Tom Davis, First Secretary (Development Cooperation),
Sri Lanka and Maldives, DFAT

CHALLENGES

a) The hotel constantly changed venues during the three day event due to weddings being in the main Pavillion and sound traveling through to the meeting rooms.
b) The organising team was completely based out of Australia and Pakistan and was coordinated completely online.

SOLUTIONS

Curative managed a full 16ft by 6.5 feet LED screen to cater to the hall roof at Cinnamon Grand. Further, included LED Ambience lighting throughout the room and used TV Screens so users can watch the complete digital exhibition of the alumni impact stories at any time during the breaks.

The event included 1 main event hall and 2 alternative breakout room spaces. Curative helped build a LED Screen display, digital exhibition for the impact stories of the Alumni, managed all production, printing and anything in between for the event. Further, The workshop included masterclasses delivered by Digital Storytellers, a Sydney-based film agency, and Curative. The masterclasses provided opportunities for participants to improve their storytelling and public speaking skills.

“I learned a lot about the process, the importance of storytelling, and the power it has to touch people. It was an amazing experience learning various strategies, preparing presentations, and practicing to present.”
Dr Sunita Maleku,
Australia Awards alumna, Nepal
